ATHENS — The news on Georgia star basketball player Yante Maten isn’t as bad as it could have been.

Maten has been diagnosed with a knee sprain, the team announced on Sunday morning, and will not require surgery. But he also was categorized as being out “indefinitely,” with no timetable for his return.

“I am very disappointed for Yante,” Bulldogs coach Mark Fox said. “He loves to play, and it’s tough when that is taken away by injury. Fortunately, it appears that surgery is not needed, and he should make a full recovery in time.”

Maten was injured 95 seconds into the game Saturday against No. 13 Kentucky after he collided with a Wildcats player under the basket. He didn’t re-enter the game, though he was able to return to the bench, walking and standing on his own power. After the game, Fox called the injury “serious” and “significant.”

A junior forward, Maten entered the game as Georgia’s leading scorer and rebounder. He was among the SEC leaders in both categories. He likely was to be named first-team All-SEC.

Georgia (15-12 overall, 6-8 in the SEC) has four regular-season games remaining: Thursday at Alabama, then home games against LSU and Auburn, and at Arkansas. Then comes the SEC Tournament.

“Our team has always been able to saddle back up,” Fox said after the game on Saturday. “We’ve got a lot of games to play. You never know what could happen if you win the next one. So, we’ll focus on trying to win the next one.”
